The Department of Zoology and Aquaculture was conceived in the year 1998 and from its inception, the Department offers a graduate programme in Zoology, with Botany as a complementary subject and Aquaculture as a vocational subject. The Department has carved a niche for itself in the realm of life sciences by imparting different training programs as well as by conducting exhibitions and participating in various aquashows at national and International levels. The activities of the department are focused in setting up a platform for students so that they are sculpted to be academically competent, self reliant individuals with a strong sense of biophilia.
The Department is having 3 laboratories, one each for Zoology, Aquaculture and Botany, and a computer lab, with facilities for conducting practicals and carrying out experiments in diverse areas of Biological Sciences and aquaculture.
Prof. Sunny Jose was the Head of Department of Zoology, when the Department came into existence. Presently the faculty includes five members, two each in Zoology and Aquaculture and one in Botany, with three of them holding Ph.D. degrees.
The Department strives to work in close connection with the local populace and devise strategies for the holistic development of the community.
Department of Zoology -Report 2021- 2022
ZOOFEST 2022 (Ernakulam Zone) was conducted in an online mode on 7.03.2022. It was jointly organized by St. Xavier’s College Vaikom, Sree Sankara College Kalady and St.Teresas College Ernakulam in collaboration with Zoological Society of Kerala. Around 95 students from different colleges participated in the event. The official programme commenced with an invocation by Devika Babu, a third year B.Sc Zoology student of Sree Sankara College Kalady. Dr. Mini K.D, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, Sree Sankara College Kalady welcomed the gathering. Presidential address was delivered by Dr.Jagannadh V, President, and Zoological Society of Kerala. The event was officially inaugurated by Ms Gladys Francis (Former President of ZSK). Dr. C.P Anitha Devi , Secretary, ZSK delivered the felicitation address and the programme overview was presented by Dr. Sarita Ramachandran, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology. Vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Soja Louis, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology and the official programme ended with National Anthem. Sree Sankara College Kalady secured the overall championship with 34 points. Anugraha Rajendran of third year B.Sc Zoology, St. Xavier’s College Vaikom secured the second position in the power point presentation competition and Joseph Zion S.M of second year B.Sc Zoology bagged the third position in Radio Talk competition.
Odonate survey along Meenachil River 2022
Ten students from the Department of Zoology under the guidance of Dr. Sarita Ramachandran participated in the odonate survey along Meenachil River in collaboration with Tropical Institute of Ecological Science, Kottayam for two days (12 th and 13th March 2022). The group could identify around 30 species of odonates in the Kidangoor belt of Meenachil River.
HERMOSA 2022 the formal inauguration of Zoology association was held on 30th March 2022. Welcome address was delivered by Dr. K. J Abraham (H.O.D) which was followed by Presidential address by Dr. Rajumon T Mavunkal, Principal, St.Xavier’s College Vaikom. Inaugural address was delivered by Dr. Sajikumar K.K, Senior Technical Assistant, CMFRI, Kochi. Dr. Tomy Joseph, IQAC Coordinator and Dr. Sarita Ramachandran, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology felicitated the gathering. A solo song was rendered by Aswathykutty P.T, II B.Sc Zoology and a group dance was performed by Lakshmy M.S and Krishnapriya M, II B.Sc Zoology. Blessy V Rajan , Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology impressed the audience with a melodious rendition. Vote of thanks for the official programme was delivered by Joseph Zion of II B.Sc Zoology. Invited lecture on Cephalopod diversity was delivered by Dr. Sajikumar K.K, CMFRI , Kochi followed by an interactive session.
